Ballandean Estate Wines is an icon in the Queensland Wine Industry.

 

We are Queenslands largest and oldest family owned and operated winery and proud members of Family Business Australia. Wine has been made on the Estate since 1932, while the cellar door was opened to the public in 1970.

 

Ballandean Estate is a winery for ALL tourists. The winery is open to the public from 9am to 5pm, 363 days per year.

The tradition of winemaking on Ballandean Estate was first established in 1930, when Mr Salvatore Cardillo brought his family to settle in the Stanthorpe area. With the flood of Italian immigrants who settled in certain parts of Queensland in the first half of the century came many customs and values from the homeland… including a love of good food and wine.

 

Salvatore planted some table grapes on his farm, and from these made quantities of bulk red wine, some of which he sold locally. When his son-in-law, Mr Alfio Puglisi, took over the farm in 1941, this practice continued.

 

When Angelo and Mary Puglisi took over the farm from Angelos’ parents in 1968, they saw the potential for a new industry in the area and decided to make wine commercially. Angelo and Mary replanted the vineyard, moving from table grapes to several varieties of wine grapes. These were some of the first wine grapes to be planted on the Granite Belt and continue to produce high quality grapes.

The winery traded as Sundown Valley Vineyards until 1988, when the name was changed.

 

Today Ballandean Estate produces a large range of wines including alternative grape varieties such as Viognier and Sylvaner.  In 2009 two new varieties were introduced to the range: Durif and Saperavi.

The production facilities at Ballandean Estate are well-equipped and continual investment ensures that modern technology is well integrated.

 

The winery also boasts the oldest working barrels in the state, these 140 year old relics grace the Barrel Room Café with their overwhelming presence and are filled with ageing Liqueur Muscat and Port.

 

Ballandean Estate crushes over 350 tonne of grapes each year and is currently exporting to the Taiwan and Canada.

 

Each year Ballandean Estate stages one of the largest cultural and tourism events on the Southern Downs, that is ‘Opera in the Vineyard’. This event presented jointly with the Stanthorpe Rotary Club, attracts around 2500 guests. The outdoor concert is performed on the permanent rock stage built to overlook the beauty of the vineyard and nearby National Park. This widely acclaimed, annual charity event benefits many Queensland charities.

 

As a tourist destination, Ballandean Estate has much to offer. The spacious and comfortable tasting room as well as the relaxing Barrel Room Café make any visit to the Estate pleasant and satisfying. The café offers substantial yet affordable meals for the entire family to enjoy.  Group catering has been an integral part of the business for over twenty years.

 

In 2008, Ballandean Estate opened The Gourmet Food Gallery, a hall of local and international products available for sample and sale 7 days per week.

 

Ballandean Estates most outstanding feature is the commitment of the family to excellence. As a team, the Puglisi family is committed to building a successful business, increasing awareness of the industry and promoting the region by organising events that attract large numbers of tourists and encourage them to return again and again. Individually, members of the family are representatives on local and regional wine and tourism committees that assist in promotion and expansion of the region.

 

The Puglisi family who operate the business are Angelo and Mary Puglisi, along with the daughters and sons-in-law, Leeanne and Mario Gangemi and Robyn and Ian Henderson.
