Master of Wine Peter Scudamore-Smith: Ballandean Estate’s 2018 Opera Block Shiraz is a sophisticated example of cool climate Shiraz. This 50th vintage has tannins of silk, a caressing texture, lovely length of black fruits, oak spice, spotlessly woven flavours and a palate-pleasing light to medium body. Drink now in that fresh zone of vibrant joy aged 2 to 5 years, or enjoy at its maturing peaks of 15 to 25-plus years.
Typical cool climate flavour profile, with minerality, an acidic spine, stone fruits, tropical aromas of passoinfruit and guava with a citrus finish. Semillon 60%, Sauvignon Blanc 40%. Fruit from Ballandean Estate and the Hunter Valley.
Silky and seductive, you’ll love its heady perfume, exotic fruit and floral flavours. Sourced from some of the oldest vines in Australia, Viognier has been a family favourite since we planted it in the nineties. Intense fruit aromas lead you to a creamy palate of honeysuckle, pear and citrus.
Be seduced by our Fiano’s high acidity, floral aromatics, tropical and stone fruits, hints of nuttiness on the palate and sherbet-like finish. It’s a lighter-bodied, rich and textural dry unwooded white — and a Strangebird™ Wine Trail stand-out. Ballandean Estate is famed for our Fiano—we are the first to produce it in Queensland.
This single vineyard Strangebird™ delivers an intense bouquet—hints of licorice and berries and a bold dry palate of savoury blue fruits with hints of cherry and plum. The finish is smooth with lingering French oak. Saperavi hails from the Republic of Georgia, where they have been making wine for more than 8000 years.
