2016 Nebbiolo reviewed by Mike Bennie

Nebbiolo might just be a good fit in Granite Belt, though this example had me scratching my head a little. At 12.3% it felt like it was missing some stuffing, even though I typically like red wines at that alcohol for ease of drinking. I like leaner, tougher, firmer, thinner nebbiolos too. That being said, there are no rules, and Messing About with varieties seems apt in Granite Belt, despite the longevity of Ballandean Estate.

Very sinewy, lean red wine, tastes like just sour red cherry with a load of green herbs and black pepper. Perfume is all black pepper, currants, salty liquorice. The motif is all there, it’s just the extension and concentration of flavour feels a little lacking. Tannins are fine, spread in a web, tighten the wine well too. Ticks some but not all boxes. Some more flavour would be handy here, or similar. Maybe a work in progress, I’d be keen to see it with some time mellowing.
